When you visit Egypt, you need to observe these peculiarities and they won’t be hard to find:

  • Many residential buildings appear to be under construction. All you can see are incomplete structures made of bricks and cement. Egyptian law states that only finished sites have to pay tax, so the smart locals have made it appear for decades that their work has not yet been finished!
  • City of the Dead is the name given to a large cemetery that surprisingly is home to more living than the dearly departed! Due to apparent overpopulation and poverty raiding the country, many of the underprivileged are now residing in the large tombs that were initially built as the resting place for the dead.
  • Bridges, tons of bridges. In case you have visited popular cities in India as well, you will notice the similarities pretty fast. Congested streets, lots of dust and roadside food stalls.

When you visit a country, you obviously want to interact with the locals. Egyptians are friendly and some of the nicest people you will ever meet. Being an outsider, they might try to grab a few extra bucks, but you can always be shameless with bargaining and have a local guide along with you to seal the deal. It is poignant to note that local women are treated with the similar customary affairs of the Arabic culture, but foreign females are welcomed with great gusto. The compliments will come flooding from almost every English speaking Egyptian man and their marriage proposals will make you think negatively of your own docile male compatriots back home! All in all, mingling with the Egyptian folk will be a great open experience that you are sure to cherish once your vacation is done.

If you are visiting Egypt as a tourist, you might already being going in a group or plan to have a local guide to take you around. Backpacking isn’t really recommended because the only trek you would be doing is from your hotel room to a waiting taxi. In a bustling country like Egypt with sprawling cemented roads, it is recommended you join a paid tour.

There are three main cities that you could visit in Egypt – Cairo, Alexandria and Luxor. Of course, there are many more cities that are worth trying out, but these three are the most popular.
