Important points to remember before visiting Egypt:

  • Water is not free. Like majority of the Arab nations, you need to pay for drinking water. For westerners, this may not be a big deal, but it is an added expense nonetheless.
  • Remember that you are a tourist, visiting a nation that follows traditional religious patterns. Respect the local viewpoint, and do not be as free and open unless you know the laws. Ask a local guide before venturing out on your own.
  • It is recommended that you buy Egyptian items. The stuff that they sell has not yet caught on to the fashion world of the west, and their stuff like papyrus paper, perfume, etc. is something that you just need to take home because they will be delightful additions to your home.
  • Food is inexpensive and hygienic so you will enjoy heavy meat affairs that include platters and buffets. If you are a vegetarian, you might have to stick with hummus and pickled veg.
